It was 17 years ago that we got together for the Hydroponic Lettuce Project, the second gathering of Killer Voyage. We drove up to Syracuse to meet Pete at the Amtrak station, lugging two ADAT recording decks. On the way back down to Ithaca, along Route 13, we drove past Cornell's hydroponic lettuce greenhouses, glowing lush green at the end of a field of white snow. That ended up being a theme for the project and artwork for the CDs.
Pete brought two ADAT recorders and mics from his Bigger Than Huge Studio in Chicago, and we set up out in the Killer Whirlpool jamming space in the Whittle's antique store basement in Trumansburg. We recorded 34 songs in 2 days: February 26 and 27.
This one was recorded on the 26th, the 10th song we made up. It's one of my favorites from the session because it has such a mood: reverby bugle from Tommy, good singing from Pete, surprising chord changes, and sensitive group dynamics and build-up. It starts out with me on electric guitar, then the rest of the band comes in: Jon on drum kit, PeBo on cowbell and congas, Tim on bass, Tommy on bugle, and Pete on his 12-string acoustic guitar. Then Pete improvised some lyrics as he sang.
Thanks for listening!
