2happen on a Monday2008.07.11Tom - acoustic guitar, blues harp, vocals (simultaneous) Andy - acoustic guitar, piano, backing vocals, programming drums in Logic Awesome 12-bar thing that Tom wrote, from a session Tommy and I did in mangobananas studios Ithaca on July 11, 2008.7062W (feat. Tommy)The Andy Bandhttps://mangobananas.com/img/icons/W2.jpg
3new office1996Jon Morse - drums sampled from "Live It Up" on the cassette Voyager, March 1980. Andy - sample of singing to my voice mail from my cell phone, sampled three times and layered and panned; two acoustic guitars [DADGBE] (all recorded with PlainTalk mic); acoustic guitar strumming [DADGBE], bass [DADG], piano [stereo], electric guitar through Twin Reverb amp [stereo], and vocals [with doubled delay track]. Pretty far out. Could stay as is, could get more stuff, or be an intro to a bigger better song. (1/11/96). Became a better song by making the cell phone & acoustic guitar part an intro to the rockin drum, piano, guitar thing that developed with a similar melody in my head. Yes! Fabulous mix! Piano is powerful! (1/22/96). The ending is particularly beautiful, with the electric guitar and piano. I remember that I couldn't hear the piano when I was playing the guitar at the end, beacuse I hadn't decided it was part of the song yet, it was "outside the loop". But I played that bit of guitar sort of remembering what I'd done on the piano, and it melded beautifully for the first part of the piano but wasn't long enough. So in a haphazard fashion, I selected a swatch of guitar audio at the end, option-cmd-dragged it so it jumped onto the end, did the same again, and then chose the reverse command for the middle section. The way that stuff ended up lining up with the piano, the awesome coincidence of timing there, still amazes me. 6leave a traceThe Andy Bandhttps://mangobananas.com/img/icons/leaveatrace.jpg

9paradise2005.05.21Jon - drums Andy - 5 guitar tracks: strat (w/ drums, chorused clean), bass, L&R acoustics, strat (heavy) This is the first track Jon and I jammed out together 5/21/2005, a great night of jamming just drums and guitar in my den (B visiting E in CT). Drums recorded with 6 mics - kick (NAD KBM412), snare (Earthworks SR77), L overhead (Rode NT1-A), R overhead (AT2020), rack toms (SM57), and floor tom (SM57). My old AudioSpectrum SM58 knockoff was used for the vocals, and it was pointed too much towards the drums and got a lot of harsh drum noise. But the vocal track is pretty precious in a way, so I've mixed it best I can. Guitar was the Strat through the POD (9D? not sure of the patch) into the Firepod direct. Overdubs done in the wee hours, first bass (direct into Firepod), then two acoustic guitars (Earthworks SR77), then heavy electric (POD 1A patch into Firepod). Rough mix Saturday night, refined Monday 5/23 at work. 704bullfrog paradise (feat. Jon)The Andy Bandhttps://mangobananas.com/img/icons/jonjam5.jpg

39island 292005.05.21+27Jon - drums Andy - 3 guitars and bass (strat (w/drums, chorused 9C?), bass [DADG], strat solo (9D, with mda circle panner), les paul clickity bits (1D)) Awesome reggae groove jammed out Sat night 5/21/2005. Overdubs started Monday night (5/23) with bass [DADG] doing a killer low riff. Then a loopy little solo track circling around the head and echoing. This is going somewhere cool. Friday morning 5/27/05, B&I taking a vacation day, I got up at 6:30 or so and re-did the bass part. The last note of the riff was kicked, but the kick drum wasn't, so I held back and got on it and it sounds great. I did a bit more experimentation with little riffs, too, and I like it. Then I also decided the mda Stereo things created digital clipping that was harsh, so I took that off the guitar and bass. I instead did my usual manual double-track by copying and shifting. Then I did a new guitar track with my Les Paul through patch 1D of the POD, playing mostly little clicky bits that sound great. 704bullfrog paradise (feat. Jon)The Andy Bandhttps://mangobananas.com/img/icons/jonjam5.jpg

60bullfrogs and fireworks2006.06.30Jon - drums Andy - acoustic guitar, programmed percussion and drums, programmed piano, real bass, acoustic lead guitar At Jon's house June 30, 2006. Liz and twins at Bonaparte, Jon and I jammin'. The night after the jam, late night Sat. July 1, 2006: wow, discovered Logic does "beat mapping". This lets me set the metronome to us playing by constantly making small adjustments to the tempo by drawing a line between the metronome ruler marks and marks made for transients in the kick, snare, agit tracks (whatever I tell it to analyze). Wow that made things go from good to awesome. I added an Apple Loop, "Conga Groove 10", and then dropped in a MIDiI loop "World Bongo 03" that was bongos in the loop browser but I used it on an UltraBeat track with the 2-step drum kit and a Sculpture track with the "Tribal Drums" patch. I even copied it to an EXS24 "Grand Piano" track and added some chords. That's mix 1. Another night, I added chords to take the progression from 2 chords to a longer 8-bar pattern, for some parts. Some night I wrote that beautiful piano part for the 2 crescendos, just clicking in the Matrix Editor. Late July 5 (Wed) I recorded real bass, the Ibanez Roadstar II direct through the Firepod. That made mix 2. in the afternoon of July 13 (Thu), I recorded an acoustic guitar overdub (the Earthworks SR77 up close through the Symetrix preamp and S/PDIF, the Rode NT1-A a bit more than 2 feet away through the Firepod). That makes mix 3, what ended up the final mix. 704bullfrog paradise (feat. Jon)The Andy Bandhttps://mangobananas.com/img/icons/jonjam5.jpg

This song was the Pick of the Week on 2015.02.08. Here's the story:
( show )

I wrote and first recorded this song back in 2004, music first, and eventually an abundance of lyrics. It started with some chord progressions I found while playing and walking my dog Zoe that summer. In August I had recently gotten Apple's GarageBand and was looking around for good drum loops. I liked the crisp snare drum sound on this loop and it worked with the guitar part I'd been kicking around for a while. So I started the project on August 20th, and laid in some acoustic guitar with the basic ideas for the song. The next day I picked up my bass and started trying to find the bass melody line. The bass was tuned DADG from a previous session, and I soon realized I would be in a golden zone if I dropped that low string another half-step down, to C#ADG. The riff came out, and I recorded it. Next was electric guitar, played on my Strat. That became a first mix I listened to for a month or two while trying to write lyrics. Words finally came forth in October, over a few days of obsessively jotting couplets in my blank book. While still working on the lyrics, with loops playing over and over in the studio, I started noodling on the piano and found the decending melodic chords, and recorded them. I recorded a sketch of the lyrics I had so far, and it sat another couple of months. In December I came back with more lyrics than I even needed, and while preparing to record them, something else came out. As I wrote in my studio log: "wouldn'tcha know it, the whole 'at the end of the day, it's all about love' line and melody just popped out while I was about to record the rough mix. It's the whole hook and it just popped out of nowhere. This song has always felt like one I've written already but forgotten, and am trying to remember."

I think a lot about this whole idea of where songs come from, probably too much. At my most paranoid I worry that I have this feeling of the song already existing and my just trying to discover it because it DOES already exist, on someone's copyrighted album that I listened to a lot as a teenager and not at all since. I worry it was an old song by Cheap Trick or The Kinks or The Cars or The Who or whatever. On the other hand, like the Barenaked Ladies sing, it's all been done before.

I don't think I've ever written so many words for a song before. And, I don't think I've ever layered lyrics to this extreme before. Overlapping lines in choruses, sure, but two completely independent verses sung at the same time is pushing it. Maybe it will compel repeated listens, or maybe it's a frustrating listening experience. I don't know because I'm too close to it. I finished the last tweaks on this mix on New Year's Day 2005. This opens up the album babble on.

In 2007, I recorded a "refreshed" version of this, including Jon on drums, but it's not on any album and I'm not sure I like it as much as this original version.

Thanks for listening!

-Andy

at the end of the day

slowly more lit
the morning awakes
falling leaves
the cool sun makes

its way across
the gauzy gray
sitting at home
on a holiday

don't want to think
about my piles of work
don't want to think
about every jerk

just want to hang out
with my wife
make music and love
a peaceful life

      I'm riding on a rhythm
like a bird sits in a tree
      the river's really rushing
I'm just soaking in the beauty
and I can't be too worried
when it's all said and done
      you can't escape the fact
      that we all are one

at the end of the day
            it's all about love

                          reading too much news
                          drinking too much booze
                          just trying to keep
                          from feeling run over

                          feeling all alone
                          sitting by the phone
                          wishing you would
call and say you'd come over

cat in my lap I've been such a jerk
dog by my side but I want to make this work
hard to understand and I know that you know
the political tide we can do this

I want to believe I'm not so naive
in what we're doing' I want to believe
but we're driving down but I know that I alone
a road to ruin can't do much

why can't we all but I'll do my bit
just get along shovel all my shit
I wish it could be done and treat my neighbor like
with a simple song I want him to treat me

bombs aren't the answer there is too much hate
for the hate there was no mandate
sorry it's a bummer and the double-speak
but it's not going great has never been worse

at the end of the day
            it's all about love

swarms of blackbirds beaten by the day
long vees of geese finally away
the world is so crazy now it's time to kick back
I need a release and recharge a while

meditating far away I'll go
in the back yard where no one will know
forgetting our troubles leaves of absence
can be so hard where you'll always find me

but what was was every day a change
what will be will be as it stays the same
it's a simple way listen to my nonsense
to solve the mystery commentary

clouds lit pink hear the whistle blow
at the end of the day valley far below
have no doubt as the night grows darker
love is the way and I see you smile

Overview:
There are cassette tapes by "The Andy Band" dating back to 1979, when Andy was 14 years old, and he is still an avid recording musician. Sometimes The Andy Band is all about "hit record and go" improvisation, other times it's all about one-man-band multi-tracking in the studio. Since 2010, Andy has been playing some of these songs live near his new home in Vermont at open mics. He relishes the thrill of improvising with an audience, as well as singing three-part harmonies and playing bass with players there. But he also loves building up a song with layers and layers of Andys, singing and playing everything.
