13cuban sandwich2007.07.12Tim: bass (2 tracks) Andy: guitar (Strat) (3 tracks), drum programming, acoustic guitar Jon: drum kit Recording started 8 Feb 2006 in mangobananas studio, Ithaca, NY, with Tim and Andy recording loops. Another quick jam with Tim (Feb 8, 2006) over a drum beat I programmed with the mouse using Ultrabeat synth. This has some cool effects and potential for layering -- I can hear a gravelly rap over this, some urban devolution and psychedelic descent. On July 2 (Jon jam 4) Jon overdubbed drums while I played strat doing some soloing. When mixing and arranging that I found an acoustic guitar part that I layed in for 8 or 10 measures as an alternate part. Recorded that on the Taylor with the usual 2 mic setup on July 5, 2007. Also, while I was walking though the song 2 bars at a time doing the drum comps, I heard goovy parts and I played around and recorded with clavinet (EVD6) and piano (EXS24). The piano part is becoming the vocal melody (or counter-melody) in my head. That got me to this final mix on July 12, 2007.701lefty looseyThe Tim & Andy Bandhttps://mangobananas.com/img/icons/sixfootmoles.jpg

22zone of tone2006.05.20Andy - electric guitar (strat) Tim - bass Drum loops from GarageBand, arranged by Tim and Andy Tim came over May 20, 2006 for an afternoon. I'd just gotten my new Taylor 310 (acoustic guitar), but after we checked it out on the deck and talked a while I didn't record with it. This is partly because I'd previously busted the G string and replaced it with a non-Elixer Daddario string that sounded different to me. And this was a rockin' loop we got going on, with Tim riffin out and me jammin over it --and check the little grunty yeah yeah noises in the drum loop! We recorded a splurge of jammin' over the loops with me on electric guitar (Strat) and Tim on bass (Eric's Ibanez Roadstar). It was a fun jam, and the first 5 minutes or more weren't even recorded. I wanted to let Tim just rock with what he wanted to do as far as arrangement, wanted to give him a taste of producing what's in your head with a multi-track program like this. Those Apple Loops are pretty awesome. We jammed out, then played around with some cutting and pasting and tried to build an arrangement. It took longer and than TIm probably expected, but we got something pretty cool done in about 3 hours. Mix 1 is pretty much as we left the mix when Tim had to go that afternoon. I may or may not do anything else with this. Cool jam! Small World! 701lefty looseyThe Tim & Andy Bandhttps://mangobananas.com/img/icons/sixfootmoles.jpg
23into the station2007.11.20Tim - drum programming, bass Andy - drum programming, guitars Tim visiting from the UK, an afternoon of fun in the studio....Nov 20, 2007. The awesome rhythm comes from the trains in England via Tim, the great syncopation and melding of the two parts was awesome. I played my Strat, Tim played Eric's bass. We both went DI thru the Firepod, jamming together to find the riffs while monitoring thru the studio monitors. We recorded bits for different loops separately. The guitar doing the rhythm crunch is tuned CADGBE (E dropped down to a C). Logic's bass amp and guitar amp plugins were used on all gits. 701lefty looseyThe Tim & Andy Bandhttps://mangobananas.com/img/icons/sixfootmoles.jpg

An alternate version of this song was the Pick of the Week on 2016.09.14. Here's the story:
( show )

Back on 10 September 2009, I brought my recording gear over to my buddy Jon's house, and we set up in his loft. PeBo also came over, and played my Dragonfly five-string fretless acoustic-guitar-style bass most of the night --although he set up his congas and timbales, too. He also brought his Presonus FireStudio Project 8-channel interface, which we daisy-chained to my FireStudio 2626 for 16 inputs, and we used 12 of them. We sent the electric guitar and bass direct into the computer and all wore headphones. We did our usual, unusual all-improv rock thing, and came up with a few gems, two of which I put on my 2013 album all over the map. The first of those I highlighted a few weeks ago, called "I can't stand it", and that one actually segued right into this one, although I edited them to be separate songs. Pete sings quite a bit on this one, and the lyrics (such as they are) make reference to a few recordings that Tim and I did back in the early 80s on some tapes we called The Tim and Andy Band that have unfortunately not been digitized yet. Tim and I were 15 back then, so please excuse the crude reference to grabbing something that rhymes with "walls". [Update Aug 2017: those 10 albums of The Tim & Andy Band tapes are online now! Check out Baby and Baby II and the mangobananas picks! Tim & Paul & I also paid homage to this adolescent classic in 2010 with baby (part 17) from 2010's chimney cats.]

While "I can't stand it" was just mixed down from the original multi-track recording of drums, bass, electric guitar, and vocals, this one needed more work. The sections where the bass and electric guitar drops out and there's a progression of cool chords on piano and acoustic guitars were overdubbed back home because Pete inadvertantly dropped down a half-step on the fretless bass while I was wandering on the electric guitar. (This was only possible because there was no bass or guitar bleeding into the drum mics since they were recorded direct!) I also added the auto-wah (envelope filter) effect in places to funk up the guitar. I intended to take it a step further and overdub a chorus of backing vocals singing "baby" near the end, but never got around to it. Still, I love the energy of this improvisation, and especially love the way Jon's drum fills sound in that loft space. I miked his kit using just 4 mics using the Glyn Johns technique, which is by far my favorite way to get a big, realistic drum sound that incorporates the room sound, a wide stereo field, and still gets a tight kick and snare sound. In the pic below you can see the two Audio-Technica AT2020 large-diaphragm condenser mics, one high over the kit on Jon's left, one down pretty low on Jon's right, both equidistant from the snare. You can also see a black boom stand reaching in toward the snare drum which had an EarthWorks SR77 small-diaphragm condenser mic on the end, pointing down at about a 45 degree angle toward a spot about 2 inches from the rim. You can't see the CAD KBM412 kick drum mic pointing toward the hole in the front of the kick drum.

Thanks for listening!

-Andy
