This song was the Pick of the Week on 2016.07.24. Here's the story:
( show )

This album's songs are all over the map, and many were inspired by or actually recorded on trips to some far-flung locations: Anguilla, Turks & Caicos Islands, Belgium, Germany, and Jamaica:

The opening song, "ceiling fan", was mostly recorded with GarageBand on an iPad on the beach in Anguilla, BWI, in 2011. "Caico" was written soon after Andy returned home from a vacation to the Turks and Caicos Islands with a rescue puppy. A wild end to a business trip to Ghent, Belgium, inspired the song "white cat". The Eurodisco-inspired "Stuttgart" was recorded on a business trip to Germany, in the hotel the night before returning home. Andy was lying in a hammock in Jamaica with his iPad for "one and all". And finally, the songs "I can't stand it" and "baby" were improvised one right after the other by PeBo, Jon, and Andy out at Jon's house in Ithaca, NY. The rest were recorded in mangobananas studio in Andy's house in Ithaca, NY, except "wonderful" and the second part of "ceiling fan", both recorded in the new mangobananas studio in his new house in West Windsor, VT.

The album wraps with "outta town blues", a song Andy wrote in 2009 about a year before deciding to move from Ithaca to Vermont.

Jon plays drum kit on "wonderful", which is from a computer drum replacement session in 2007 for "these days"; parts of the "these days" drums were re-used for "wonderful". Jon plays drum kit and PeBo plays bass and sings b-vox on "I can't stand it" and "baby", which are from the aforementioned session at Jon's house in Sept 2009. All other instruments and singing by Andy Wyatt.

Overview:
There are cassette tapes by "The Andy Band" dating back to 1979, when Andy was 14 years old, and he is still an avid recording musician. Sometimes The Andy Band is all about "hit record and go" improvisation, other times it's all about one-man-band multi-tracking in the studio. Since 2010, Andy has been playing some of these songs live near his new home in Vermont at open mics. He relishes the thrill of improvising with an audience, as well as singing three-part harmonies and playing bass with players there. But he also loves building up a song with layers and layers of Andys, singing and playing everything.
